Although the number of users has grown since I last took a dump of users stats (as "reported" in OU Course Profiles Facebook App - Treemaps), I'm still tinkering with the original dump of 700 or so anonymised user records from the Open University Course Profiles Facebook application to see what other low hanging fruit there is in terms of graphical reporting we can explore.
After chatting with Jon Rosewell yesterday about the commenting frequency of students in the Open Studio application on T189 (of which, more in a later post, maybe?) I thought I'd have a quick look at the distribution of the number of courses declared by Course Profiles app users.
Here's the distribution curve...

The shape looks kind of familiar, doesn't it?
Here's the data sorted into log (ish;-) ordered bins:

I'm not sure what the status of the users who entered a single course code is? Maybe they are students on their first course, or on a single OpenLearn course, or maybe they are just trying the application out?
And I'm not sure how to best to dig into this sort of data... are there any 'standard' ways of reporting 'power law' data, I wonder?
Hmmm - maybe it's time to start looking at some formal academic reporting... now I wonder, what were my Science Direct credentials again? Where in the library website can I find a way into the citation databases? Ah, buggrit, as someone in a Terry Pratchett book probably once said - I'll use Google Scholar...
PS I tried Google Google first of course - The Future of Power Law Research by Michael Mitzenmacher (Internet Mathematics Vol. 2, No. 4: 525-534 ) looks like it might be quite interesting, although it isn't exactly what I was looking for...
