...and the simplest thing (at least, if you've hung around the OU for any length of time) is a course code (e.g. T396 or t396 - case doesn't matter) or qualification code (e.g. d21 or D21 - again, case doesn't matter).
So where does this get you? To the Courses and Qualifications page corresponding to the course or qualification code you provided...

Many OU courses require students to purchase books for a course. To find out whether a course has such a requirement, just append the word books to the end of the course code, like this (I'm working on getting the delay before the page loads down...):
