TU120 Beyond Google
1.3 The information iceberg
In this topic, I want to explore:
  • the scale of the Web
  • the rate at which it is increasing in size
  • the different kinds of content that exist on it
  • the extent to which this content is accessible to search engines
  • the ways in which the generation of content is changing.
....SNIP....
1.3.4 Activity: exploring user-generated content
In this exercise I want you to get a feeling for the nature and extent of UGC. You should expect to spend at least an hour on this. Indulge your curiosity and follow links that interest you.
1. Visit Technorati; Lightbox Technorati
Use the search box to look for blogs on subjects that interest you. Follow some of the links to get a feeling for each type of blog. (Tip: you can usually get to the blog's home page by clicking on its title.)
2. Visit Flickr; Lightbox flickr
Get a feel for the site.
3. Visit You Tube; Lightbox YouTube
Take some time to explore the site. Then select two video clips to watch. If you find that nothing happens when you click on a movie link, it probably means that your browser does not have a Flash player plug-in installed. These plug-ins are available free from Adobe at: Adobe Flash Player.

1.4 Why is search such an important topic?
